If you've ever asked yourself, "Should I book now, or should I wait?", you're not alone.
It's one of the most common questions I receive as a travel advisor, whether we're discussing Disney vacations, cruises, all-inclusive resorts, or bucket-list adventures. My answer is usually simple:
For most vacations, I recommend booking 9–12 months in advance.
Not because I want you to rush into a decision, but because booking early gives you the best combination of pricing, availability, flexibility, and peace of mind. Let's talk about why.
The Biggest Travel Myth: Prices Always Drop if You Wait
Many travelers assume that if they wait long enough, they'll eventually find a better deal.
Sometimes that's true. Most of the time? Not really. Think about a cruise ship. When a sailing first opens for booking, there are thousands of cabins available. As people begin booking, the most desirable cabins disappear first. As inventory shrinks, prices often increase.
The same thing happens with:
Disney resorts
Popular all-inclusive resorts
Cruise ships
Guided vacation packages
Holiday travel
While no one can predict exactly what prices will do, waiting doesn't typically create more options—it usually creates fewer. And sometimes, it creates a completely different problem.
A Real Client Story: The Cruise That Sold Out
A few months ago, a prospective client reached out about taking a cruise this fall. She wasn't looking for just any cruise. She wanted a specific ship and a specific itinerary. We went through my planning process, discussed her options, and I prepared her quote. Then life happened. A few weeks passed before we were able to reconnect.
When we finally touched base again, I logged into the booking system to update pricing and review her options. The cruise was gone. Not more expensive. Not limited. Completely sold out. Every cabin on that sailing had been booked.
At that point, we weren't discussing whether the price had increased. We were discussing entirely different ships and itineraries.
That's why I tell clients that the biggest risk of waiting isn't always paying more. Sometimes the vacation you actually wanted simply isn't available anymore.
Why I Recommend Planning 9–12 Months Ahead
When clients start planning early, they gain something incredibly valuable: Options.
Booking early often means:
✔ More resort choices
✔ Better cabin selections
✔ Better flight schedules
✔ More room categories available
✔ Greater flexibility if plans change
✔ More time to watch for promotions
When we begin planning a year out, we're usually choosing from what's available. When we start planning a month out, we're choosing from what's left. That's a big difference.
Ask About Complimentary Holds and Refundable Deposits
One thing many travelers don't realize is that some suppliers offer options that can protect your vacation plans while you continue making decisions.
Complimentary Holds
Many cruise lines and suppliers allow travel advisors to place a temporary hold on a reservation. Depending on the supplier, that hold may last anywhere from 24 hours to several days. This gives you time to think through your decision without immediately losing the space you're considering.
Refundable Deposits
Some suppliers also offer refundable deposit options. These aren't available on every vacation, and they're not always the best fit, but they can provide valuable flexibility. In some cases, you may be able to secure the vacation you want today while maintaining the ability to make changes later.
This is one reason I encourage travelers to start planning early—even if they're not ready to fully commit. The earlier we begin the conversation, the more options we have available.
One of the Biggest Benefits of Booking Early
One of my favorite things about working with clients who plan ahead is that I can continue monitoring their reservation after it's booked.
Let's say we book your cruise 11 months before departure. Six months later, the cruise line releases a promotion. If your reservation qualifies, I may be able to apply that promotion and lower your price. The same can happen with Disney vacations and many vacation packages.
When you wait until the last minute to book, we lose the opportunity to take advantage of future promotions because there simply isn't enough time left. Time is one of the most powerful tools in travel planning.
My Service Doesn't Change—But Your Options Do
Here's something I think every traveler should know. Whether you book a year in advance or a month before departure, my service remains the same.
You'll still receive:
Personalized vacation planning
Destination recommendations
Booking management
Travel expertise
Ongoing support
Someone to call when questions arise
The difference is that travelers who book early often pay less and have more choices. Travelers who wait often pay more and have fewer choices. Both receive the same level of service. One simply has more opportunities available.
Vacations That Should Be Booked Even Earlier
Some trips deserve even more lead time than the typical 9–12 months. Consider booking as early as possible for:
Disney Vacations During Peak Seasons
Spring Break
Thanksgiving
Christmas
New Year's
Cruises
Alaska cruises
European cruises
Holiday sailings
Disney Cruise Line
Group cruises
Specialty Accommodations
Suites
Family staterooms
Concierge-level experiences
Unique resort room categories
If you have a very specific vision for your vacation, earlier is almost always better.
What About Last-Minute Deals?
Yes, they exist. But they work best for flexible travelers. If you're willing to travel on short notice, fly from different airports, are open to multiple possible destinations, adjust your dates, the last minute deals can be fantastic.
However, most families don't travel that way. Most people don't travel that way. Most people have work schedules, school schedules, sports/volunteer schedules, budget limitations, preferred destinations. The more restrictions you have, the less likely you'll benefit from waiting.
The Bottom Line
I've never had a client call me because they booked too early. I have had plenty of clients call me because they waited too long. The good news? Starting the planning process doesn't mean you have to book tomorrow.
In fact, some of my favorite clients are the ones who reach out before they've decided exactly what they want. They know they want to travel. They know they want expert guidance. They're simply exploring their options. That's the perfect time to start the conversation. Because the best vacations don't begin when you board the plane.
They begin with a plan.
